What to Send Us: Photos Help

You don't need to know the name of the problem. Four or five phone photos and a sentence or two are enough for us to know what to bring and what to look at first.

1. The whole thing, from the ground. Stand back far enough to get the entire chimney, wall, steps or stretch of foundation in one frame. It shows height, access and what is next to it.
2. The roofline, for chimneys. Where the chimney meets the shingles, from the yard or an upstairs window, on each side you can see. Please stay off the roof. We will go up.
3. Close-ups of the damage. From arm's length: the crack, the spalled brick, the open joints, the loose stone, the bulge in the stucco. Put a coin or a tape measure in the shot so we can judge size.
4. The inside, if water is involved. A stain on the ceiling near the chimney, a damp patch on a basement wall, or white powder on the brick all help trace where water is getting in.
5. A few words. Your address or neighborhood, roughly how old the house is, and how long you have been watching the problem.

Photos never replace looking at the masonry in person, and we won't price a job from pictures alone. They do tell us how urgent it is, and if a roofer, a chimney sweep or a structural engineer should see it before we do.
